Guildford in Bloom

On Friday the 14th June a lovely lady called Cathy came to judge the flower pots that Waterfall, Bridge and Willow Classes planted last month. Cathy was very impressed with the donations of decorations for the pots and somewhat amused at the British flags in two of the pots – a jest at the weather (although it stayed dry for the durations of Cathy’s visit)!

The students showed Cathy what they have been doing in Waterfall and Bridge Classes in Horticulture: the planting and maintenance of vegetables, flowers and herbs into pots in the greenhouse and into bigger tubs in the Courtyard. Some of what has grown outside was cultivated from kitchen scraps, like spring onions and even a pineapple that has rooted!

We loved showing Cathy around and sharing our enjoyment of gardening with her as we learn about the importance of sustainability, pollination and bees and butterflies in our gardens and even why we need trees and plants in the first place. Cathy was very interested in our terrariums showing how we can create a small habitat and ecosystem in a glass jar.

We look forward to going to the prize giving ceremony at Clandon Park Garden Centre this week.
